DLNA server - without PS3???

Postby plakata1 » 27 Jun 2009 17:07

Okay, I'm SORRY if I post this in the wrong place but I don't know where else to turn.

Case is, I have a Sony KDL-37V5500 (http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/413611111X.pdf). This TV can stream video - as I understand it - from a DLNA server. Whenever I google DNLA server it involves a PS3. And I don't have one of those, and I do not intend to get one.

I want to setup my laptop as DNLA server if it is possible, and via. network stream my videoes just using my laptop and my tv.

Is this at all possible? Does anybody know about this?

Regards,
Plakata.

you have several solutions, the following 2 worked for me and a PS3 :
- windows media player 11 (through library sharing)
- Tversity

I suggest also this link : http://www.rbgrn.net/content/21-how-to- ... x-or-linux

Maybe XBMC will work too as UPnP server (even if its first work is a UPnP renderer).

TVersity does NOT support sony bravia tv as client due to some limitations in the tv software :(

WMP11 sees my sony bravia, but the sony bravia do not see my computer :(

I don't know of any other available software. Any help appreciated. Very much.

just for future reference when someone searchs for an answer:

theres a good reason you keep finding those links involving ps3, its because the 'ps3 Media server' is by far the best open, cross platform java based DLNA server there currently is.

its a shame VLC doesnt intigrate with it, as the combination of both ,VLC as its back end transcoder, and PMS as the DLNA server front end could be a very good thing, is there any interest by the devs to include this option some day i wonder? , probably not.

its NOT just for ps3 clients anymore, works well with the xbox360 too and several more...

the current version 1.11.r356 works fine with several sony tvs now, as can be seen in its ps3 media server thread here, infact that thread shows that it was fixed for Exactly your TV model before you asked your question here.

Dude Mezzmo FTW!!
Ok so my Sony bdp-bx7 blue ray player has DLNA on it so i can transfer movies off my computer wirelessly! unfortunately it only allows mpeg2 movie formats :(
And I got tired of trying to find or convert to the right format for my Sony and i have 250gigs of movies on my external hard drive in everything from .avi to flash!
So i tried a bunch of commercial DLNA servers that had those fly-by transcoders but none of um worked with my Sony or my computer!!
i spent weeks trying everything from "Fuppes" to "Twonky" and none of um were compatible except for "Mezzmo"
Actually to tell you the truth even Mezzmo wasn't compatible at first...And the worst part was they said on there new release they supported Sony blue ray players!!
so i email them to see what the deal was?!
And honestly i really didn't think ide hear anything but 10 minutes later i get a response!

"Hi Brandon,

Can you please try this updated device profile:
http://www.conceiva.com/downloads/MezzmoFIx/SonyBDP.zip

You’ll need to:
1) Stop your server and close down Mezzmo
2) Copy all .prf files from the archive to DeviceProfiles folder (see this thread for its location: http://forum.conceiva.com/showthread.ph ... es-located)
3) Start the server and try again

Also, if it doesn’t work, please go to Media Devices dialog in Mezzmo and change your device profile for your BDP to one with “No DivX” in the title. Check if that helps and please let me know how it goes.

Let me know if you need further help.

Best regards

Paul

so i install everything and just like that im streaming all my movies through my sony!!
after weeks of messing with my blue ray and trying to find a DLNA server that would work on my computer and sony and do fly-by transcoding i finally found it!!
HELL YEA!!
sorry i just got this working like half an hour ago and still pretty excited :)
anywayz "Mezzmo" is definitely worth trying :D
