Digital video primer?

I'm actually having a hard time figuring out what question to ask here so
here goes...

I've been using my mac g5 for ripping, burning and watching dvds for
several months now. I'm curious as to how some of the packages work
and how the different audio/video formats interact. What's a BUP file and
how does one go about editing or creating one? I played around with
linux boxes for years before I got this mac so I'm used to knowing a
little more about what is going on behind the scenes. Basically, I guess
I'm looking for something like "Digital Video formatting and editting for
Dummies".

Any ideas anyone?

A .BUP is simply a copy of the .IFO file of same name (BUP is short for BackUP)

And the .ifo file contains information about the .vob files on the disk, I'm
assuming. Typically, what audio and video formats are used for the .vob
files on a dvd? What information needs to be on the dvd for your typical
dvd player to actually play the video? Can all this be done with vlc?

See what I said about not knowing what question to ask? You answer
one and I've got more heading your way.

Well, by format definition, it will contain video in the MPEG2 format, audio in the Dolby AC-3 compression format -or- as PCM, with a quantisation in the latter case between 16 and 24 bits and a sampling rate at an integer multiple [2 or greater] of 24 kHz -and optionally- dts Coherent Acoustics, with a total of 8 audio streams allocated.
VLC plays DVDs, albeit the current version has dts suport suspended for legal reasons. What else is there to say?
