Recording Live and streaming to multiple users

I've read quite a lot in the last few hours, but I'm still not sure whether VLC is the right way to achieve the following:
I need to stream a video-signal from minidv to approx. 50 viewers. Due to bandwith-restrictions I thought of sending the encoded data (mpeg4 I guess) to a darwin streaming server, to which the viewers can connect and view the video.
Is there some way to do this with VLC? How do I have to send the data, by UDP or RSTP? If connecting to the Darwin Server isn't possible, how else can I stream to multiple users?
Thanks in advance!
