streaming problem

Postby warryx » 02 Feb 2012 03:25

Hello, my name is Cesar, im from Chile South America. I`m doing my thesis about audio coding, i made a surround 5.1 mix in Pro Tools ( Audio software or DAW if you prefer) of an animation video, the thing is that i must make a streaming over the internet and receive the video with surround sound as a final work. I tried to do it with the help of my brother, i read the documentation about streaming and used the wizard, because i dont know very well on how to use the command line. My brother lives in other city of Chile. The technical data of my video is this (so you can tell if im doing something wrong): After i take the surround sound i put it into the video with the software compressor, so i obtained a .mov file ( container) with the video in MPEG-4 and audio in AAC 5.1. I reproduced the video in VLC in my Macbook Pro with a Presonus interface from where i took the surround sound, and no problems, the video sounded great !! :) . Then i took the video and made a TS (Transport stream). I did`nt make a transcoding for the audio or video, so i got the same compression for audio and video but in .ts format. We tried in diferents way to stream the video, my brother opened the port 8080 in his router to stream. We used the http way, he opened the stream wizard to make an http stream, because is the most compatible, then he wrote my ip adress like this http://192.x.x.x:8080, and i wrote the same but with his ip adress in the "opening a network or stream" menu ( i dont know how to write this , because in the spanish version of VLC it says " abrir red" wich literally means ..open network , but i think is like open stream ) and in the URL i wrote http://192.x.x.x:8080 the ip adress of my bro. He started to stream but was imposible for me to opened his stream, we tried to use other formats like unicast and using our ip's adress but never i got any image or sound. Fist i make it with a 180 megas video, but then i compressed more and obtain a 55 megas video, but still i can`t get the stream. I read the forum and see some youtube videos on how to do it, but i ask now for your help, maybe is not so hard. Well..i hope my english is good enough for you to understand my problem, i think maybe is the routers. Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Saludos desde Chile :)

pd: he put the TTL in 2 because of the 2 routers .
pd: th ip adresses are only an example , we are not in LAN ...is over the internet

Hi Cesar !

I'm far from being an expert in VLC streaming, but if I were you I would remove that ttl option, or set ttl=-1 (which lets the OS decide itself on the TTL), and go unicast for the time being, no multicast. Setting ttl to 2 would necessarily fail if you communicate via internet, since there are certainly much more than two hops between both of you :)
