Video Quality

I am looking for a way to determine the quality of various video streams.

Quality seems to be all over the map. So far broadcast (actual over-the-air broadcasting) direct to the TV seems to be the best. There are all kinds of video sources available on the net, some of them are not too bad, some of them are downright awful.

I got the DVD player working in my new ZBOX (with Linux) the other day, and it looks pretty good, but there were some subtle things I noticed and I am wondering what was causing it. Is that what is actually on the disk, or is something getting lost in translation?

I watched an episode of a television series yesterday evening off of the net. It was available over the net before is was broadcast, which I thought was pretty weird. The quality wasn't that great, but it was smooth and no blatant artifacts appeared, but it was small. When it was over I switched to the TV where the same show was just starting and difference in quality was just astounding.
