reducing volume during transcode

I need an audio stream in my stream output but I want to ramp the volume right down.

Stupid sageTV won't play an mpg with no audio stream so I am adding a fake stream but don't want to hear the content.

--volume=0 seems to do nothing to the mpg file I'm generating - is must be playback only.

Is there any way?

(and don't say press the mute button!)

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

I am searching for an answer to your question too. The last 3 months i have been connected to vlc's irc channel numerous times and no one has responded to my questions.

It is the most obvious thing, when someone transcodes/encodes audio stream, he should be able to alter audio levels. An audio stream when it is converted from digital to analog multiple times in a transmission chain, it can be clipped, that's why the streamer/transcoder has to have the option to reduce audio levels. I cannot believe it is not implemented somehow.

I understand that many people are involved with vlc and probably most of them have different interests but vlc should have a mechanism where specific questions go to appropriate people to be answered, or write a proper manual for gods shake(that goes to all developers that contribute). Most user-questions remain unanswered.
I cannot find a guy that understands the audio filter modules(pre amp, band equilizer etc).
I hope someone sees that topic...

Michael good luck
