How to Stream Live Video using VLC over Internet?

Basically what the title says. A step by step guide would be nice. For example I want to stream a video that I have on my computer to a friend's computer who isn't on the same network as me.

No one is gonna answer you on this, mate. There are tons of guidelines in the vlc wiki and in the forum. The problem is, that VLC is capable of almost anything and there will never be a simple "how-to" manual for it.
