Live 720p@59.94 encoding

hi all,

I can't find anything regarding this... I would like some advices on how to do live hd streaming. Anyone have experience?

I have 2 capture cards that can do HD but they both don't work with VLC (Osprey 700e HD and Blackmagic Intensity Pro).

I am doing my tests on a dual quad xeon 2.4ghz, that's 8 cores and I can barely do 1280x720@59.94 using default x264 parameters from an HDV signal through the firewire port.

Any inputs is appreciated.

I guess you have to adjust X264 parameter.

You could try nightly-builds with more current libx264, it should be faster.

I guess you have to adjust X264 parameter.
Well I have read the documentation and I am using all the defaults parameters to make sure nothing use too much CPU. I guess that defaults options should be better suited for this, am I wrong?
You could try nightly-builds with more current libx264, it should be faster.
I have tried 1.0.2 but the performance is still quite the same. :(

What is the % core loading on the CPUs? The reason I ask is that I am unclear how and to what extent VLC and X264 handle multithreading?

Perhaps a VLC guru may be able to tell us more?

Might be worth experimenting with the "threads=" command to make more efficient use of the CPU/cores power you have available. Is "Hyperthreading" enabled in bios? If so you might want to try it disabled.

I have also found that USB and Firewire use up much more system rescource than PCI(E) cards and generally slow things down.

I am very interested in how this post develops as I will be experimenting with a 2xXeon single core 2.4G at 768x576 as efficiently as possible in the next few weeks.

maybe you have to reduce the subme and me.
for example, subme = 3 or 1 ; me = dia
threads > 1

BTW, when you use default (subme =5, me = hex) configuration what is the CPU rate? (I'm interested dual CPU 8 cores. ;-) )

Hello Fred:

I managed to stream HD with both Intensity Pro and Osprey 700e HD from ViewCast. The solution it worked for me was the TikiLive HD broadcaster. For example Intensity Pro Card recommended for HD broadcasting comes
with an adaptor that must be attached to the capture card in order for it to accept component HD video signals.

Hello Catalin,

Thanks for your inputs. Connecting the cables and the HD source is not the problem at the moment. I have searched for the software "TiKiLive HD Broadcaster" but couldn't find any trial or place to download it.

Can you please tell me where to find that broadcaster software?
