Although reasonably computer literate I am new to the world of streaming, capture and saving and have found too much jargon and complexity to make even a tentative stab. What I need is a guide or direction to everything basic that I need, apart from VLC, to capture an internet video stream and save it for viewing. I have no special software or hardware so talk of capture cards, directshow etc mean nothing to me; similarly use of command line instructions needs explanation etc.
Please can someone point me in the right direction,. I have VLC version 1.0.0 and use windows xp sp3.

I'm afraid your question is not spacific enough for anyone to give you a definitive answer.

OK, let me rephrase it. What hardware and software do I need in order to get started - all I have at present is VLC, things like Nero8 (which I absolutely hate) Imgburn. a dvd+-rw burner windows xp sp3 on a dell laptop with 2.1Ghz Pentium M with 1GB ram. Any additional hardware required and any additional software?
Once I have the necessary basics how do I use VLC to capture the video stream, and once I have done that how do I go about saving it?
If there is any more information you require please let me know - that is why I am asking this very basic question, because I cannot find an answer anywhere that I understand.

Does this mean that I cannot use VLC. I had understood, maybe wrongly, that the commercial products you refer to were Ok for thungs like YouTube but did not give good quality wheras VLC does.

From they way you had phrased your question, I felt those type of products suit your need better, surfing the web, and saving videos you see..
Of course you could still use vlc, but I don't think too many peeps use vlc to just save a stream.
vlc is like a swiss army knife, does lots of things, but for some things, it's better to use a tool that is singular to it's purpose..

The forum you are currently in, is more about getting vlc to serve video out, not save.

If you have an address of a stream you wan't to save, and unable to go thru "open network stream" or "streaming"
or this doesn't make any sense..
