Simple streaming how-to 0.9.9

Postby b4dc0d3r » 04 Jul 2009 19:50

Hi,

Can you tell me simple steps to stream using 0.9.9?

I don't care what protocol, commandline or GUI, I just want it to work. The streaming docs on the wiki, and most everywhere on the internet are not updated for 0.9.9 so they are no help.

Specifically, when I try to serve, it asks me for an IP address and when I open the client I also am asked for an IP address.

I want to either:
1) Start playing a file on one computer, and use another computer to connect to that server over whatever protocol
or:
2) If I have to, Play on one computer TO a specific address. Although this doesn't make as much sense.

The wiki docs have lots of information, but they tell ABOUT streaming if you want to know all of the details. There are samples which doesn't seem to be working - I can't "cannot open stream" or similar errors. I verified I can connect over the local netrowk (router) using telnet on the port, so it isn't a firewall problem. I tried direct unicast, http, https, mms, and all kinds of examples from the intartubes. Nothing is working, cannot connect.

So, would someone be kind enough to spell it out, for 0.9.9, and please make some decisions for me about which protocol and ports to use as I don't care. I would rather not transcode - just send the file directly.

And if you could, please let me know if it's fairly simple to stream an entire folder or playlist (m3u) or if those require different steps. I saw some docs for old versions that said streaming is not available in the "open folder" dialog, which is kinda strange... so I'm wondering if I can play an entire folder, with subfolders, on Random/Shuffle mode, without too much additional trouble.

As I typed those last 3 characters, I just realized - why not just open up a file share and play directly from there? Is there any advantage to streaming, given that I can make it read-only?

I have been wondering the same things - as the how-to docs are not much help.
I have been trying for days to get it to work trying ot use what info is on the docs.
Can't get it to work - plus the programs keep crashing on both computers.

You might find this helpfull?... See link

If you are serving from a LAN, then you don't need a webserver as such, just allow web access in permissions.
Do leave the output/server IP field BLANK .Specify and use the same port number whether VLC to VLC or VLC to lan/www.web. Client does need to point to source IP/dir and port number generally

Hope you get the idea, It does work well for me.

Greg
