I have read the guide but nothing seems to be working i keep just getting error couldn't open the steam check the logs =( (btw where are those stored on windows?)

i have some computers on my lan hooked into a router, i have a machine with the video, and i have a machine i want to stream the video too. both with vlc installed. so on the server side i choose the video and i have tried all the different protocols, i have tried leaving them blank and i have tried entering the client ip.

on the client i choose open network, i put in the ip of the server and i have tried all the different protocols, nothing ever works, i just keep getting error cant open the mrl, i have pinged the computers and they can talk fine, this is driving me crazy i must just be doing doing something obviously wrong please please help =(

You can access the log in real time by clicking Tools > Messages. Set the verbose level to 2 and retry connecting to your server.

Hi - I had HUGE difficulties streaming none of which were vlc and all of which were me

NOTE (29/06/2009) - I have had to stop the streams mentione in the link above owing to my tired old server 'bailing out' and crashing my usb harddrives but I will start the streams again if needed...
(although I was tryingg to stream over the web LAN is pretty similar so this may help)

PS I have looked at you logs and I may be wrong - a REAL PERSON who knows vlc well could confirm but it looks as if your server is chugging along OK BUT your client seems not to be 'seeing' the stream - Have you got a firewall stopping access to 192.168.1.104:port 80 ?

are you broadcasting the stream on 8080 and trying to get it on 80 ?

@just-do-it : try to decrease the quality of your stream. It is the only solution I see...

@paridoth : As just-do-it suggested, I think you are trying to connect to port 80 while your server is broadcasting on port 8080. Choose the same port, preferably not the 8080 one, which is used by the HTTP interface. Choose a port higher than 1024 to avoid permissions problems.

I'm having the same issues. I have tried different protocols as well.
The docs are of no use, as things don't look like they do on my version of VLC (the most recent).

Try to send & receive on the same computer. It will eliminate any network problem. Have you checked you are streaming on a good port ( >1024 and != 8080) ?

How do I do that (on the same computer)?
I am using the defult port 1234

My pc's card address is 192.168.2.5 and I use port 8080 - which enables me to stream over the web...

If you cannot see anything after preessing the 'go' button on port 8081 then whatever firewall between you and me is blocking port 8081 - if this is changed to port 8080 it should work...
which is why I use port 8080 which is allowed by my work address

To send to port 1234 on a PC ie on my pc To recieve on the same pc ie on my pc
