What is the best codec for transmitting the desktop view(using "screen://")?
Is there any refernce or guide regarding codecs in general?

I'd hazard a guess that this would depend on what you are showing on-screen. If it is a video being shown in a window, it would make sense (to me, at least) to use the very same codec used in the production of that video, for example. You need also consider that most codecs cannot use just any transport available, but only a few. Spend some browsing http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html and http://www.videolan.org/streaming-features.html for more information.

Thanks,
It seems so obvious (that the the production codec would be the best choice for the screen codec)but I didn't think about it...
Do you know what is the default codec if I use the directshow default settings for capturing my webcam?
I use Windows XP with the VLC GUI and get in the "customize" box the following-
dshow:// :dshow-vdev="" :dshow-adev="" :dshow-size=""

Thanks in advance

Since I'm running Mac OS X exclusively myself, I wouldn't have a clue about DirectShow on Windows, sorry! :-)

There is no default codec for capturing via DirectShow, VLC will just playback the output. Tick the "Stream/Save" tickbox and select "Settings..." etc. to setup a stream.

As for the best codec to use for screen://, you could try e.g. mp4v, however most should be suitable.
