Hi all, I've searched a while but haven't seen quite the same problem.
I got VLC to see my capture card and I can capture video from my camcorder with other programs (PowerCinema 3, Win Movie Maker) but when I try to stream the video (or just view it) in VLC all I get is a snowy screen with snow lines going horizontally across the screen. It looks as if you didn't hook up the cable to your tv set.
I'm using WinXP Pro on both computers and have tried viewing on the same PC as the stream originates and on another LAN PC.

Any help would be appreciated.

You have not said what capture card it is but I had a problem with my huppague 150 mce card exactly like yours
I had given up since my hup card was an oem card manufactured solely for HP and did not have the normal chipset on the card.
I was having so many problems I had given up and thought "well if you really must buy HP its on your own head"
I then found that going into 'MovieMaker' and exiting was 'kicking' the card into action for VLC...
I don't know its a computer!

Testing Machine:
Sapphire Theatrix 550 Pro capture card (Older I know but it's the only one I could find around the shop).
WinXP Pro SP2
1 G Ram
Sony HandyCam (in the S-Video input)


I just saw a blurb that the only cards that work are the Haupaug and one other. Is this still the case and if so, would an actual webcam with it's own software work better? I'm setting this up for a doctor's office who want's web conferences with patiets so it's just a testing stage to see what we'll need to do it.
Any ideas for the best way to do this?

Use splitcam between the capture device.

There are people around vlc who may have a better idea ...
I can say that my camera (Attached to the composite input of the hupp. card) has streamed to Athens from the UK so if you need any more help I'll willingly give it but for the moment I'll butt out! good luck

ps - re splitcam - read the revews and BEWARE of viruses! - alhough it does sound interesting - does anybody use it with vlc?...

Ok, I've put off the live video for now. I think the cap card may be bad as it sometimes 'disappears' from the computer. I had to shut down, remove, restart, shut down reseat card and restart to find it again.
On to the next issue:
I got a video (.avi) to stream successfully over my LAN but Internet users are having different issues depending on how they log in.
If they use VLC they only get a short snippet then a freeze frame then short snippet.
If they use webpage I made using one from just-do-it's site then they don't get anything.
If they use WMP they get a very thin horizontal line through the center of Media Player that looks like a shrunken version of the video (about 1/4 inch high).
Right now, I'm streaming from a Cable connection with 768 upstream. The final stage will be on a T-1.
I've dropped the video size to 50%, encapsulation = ASF, Transcode = WMV1 (only way to view in WM), Bitrate 384.
This allows it to be viewed but I get the issues above. If I send it with default settings nothing goes through.

looping i easy - I think j-b told me ... --loop asin (commandline params are at http://www.videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/ch04.html when you have trouble getting to sleep )

and put in the MRL box - this is iis serving the vod

I've just tried your avi too but it will not work for me since you have got a 192... addresss in your mrl box - you need to put in your isp provided ip then forward external port 8282 to your pc(192.168.1.25 port 8282)then us mortals on the web can see your vid.
my ip is 78.86.141.80 which is turned into just-do-it.no-ip.org by no-ip.com the local address of the machine is 192.168.1.10 so my router forwards external requests to 78.86.141.80:8081 to 192.168.1.10:8081 and you see ubavs.avi - or not if my server has crashed cause its only a 1ghz single core and people will keep hacking it but hey! I can then try to learn a bit! )

My upstream is 1012Kbps (by Bethere.co.uk for 28 euros a month) and this is so much faster and cheaper than what I was getting from Virgin I will stay with them for a bit but 700Kbps should be ok I would have thought. You can check the stream speed - ubavs.avi streams at about 700Kbps by VLC;view;stream and media info once its going.
One request - if any of the things on't work let me know cause I have tried them but they could well stop and I can restart my server....

Thanks for the info Chris. I've put the external ip back in the MRL so if you could try it again I'd appreciate it.
Also, where do I use the code snippets you're posting? I've been using the interface by using Open->File->Stream/Save->Settings, etc., etc.

Well it opened - for about 200 mssec! but at least you know everything is ok re routers;firewalls etc. etc. -Ive sent the whole view;message train for yu to paw over as a private message because I did not want to clog up the thread here - someone many actually find it usefull here wasmy message when I opened the stream edit-
actually I 've watched it aggain and got a bit of video too!
I'm not sure but I get the feeling that it may be a problem with your stream speed being too high for your isp's line speed - try making the video bit rate slower and risize it so its a small pic then we can always make it bigger when we have a sustainable strem

OYE!! hehe.
I'll take a look at that. I've dropped the stream to 256kb and resized to .5 normal. I also set the webpage to be 1/2 the size it was before.

Having said that I would sack asf/wma and try mpeg ts /mp4v cause I've had more success with those. disagvantage is, as you probably know, mp4v gives WMP a headache but your activex vlc page wont have a problem.
What time zone are you in cause this is really bugging me and I would like to see it work!

also the acitvex size is not going to affect the stream - I have a faster machine on my lan and transcode / resize on that then use vlc on my web machine broadcasting 'raw' as a relay - which means my internet machine is not overloaded 'cause its stuggling! (!Ghz single core; w2k adv. server)

Finally I've read your posts again and the code snippets for example are batch file contents which I use all the time so I know what I've done. If you make a blank text file with .bat extension and paste the contents in when you run the .bat file (assuming your vlc is in the default location) you will envoke vlc and the :sout.... is the commandline to get you vid out/transcoded
