streaming video file in custum format

Hi, I' m working on a streaming project. All I have to do is to to create a server which opens a video file(this file is in a new format created in a previous project) and sends data taken from this file. On the other side I have to develop a client that renders data received from the server. I've already created the server which works on linux platform, now for the client I thoght to use VLC. Is it possible to modify videolan to obtain my target? Is there anybody who can tell me which basic steps I have to make? I'm new on VLC.
