Hi, I am try to use VLC for video conference over internet with my friends.

Just want to know what codec and muxer are the best for me? Any guideline for selection?

My scenario:
1. Internet bandwidth = 500k-1M bps ADSL connection
2. WinXP machines
3. bigger video is better, say 360x240 OR even bigger
4. usb webcam
5. our PC's can done x264 real-time encoding up to 360x240

I beleive x264 (video) + mp3 (audio) + MP4 (mux) is a good option. Am I right?

I am a programmer, knowing very little about codec / muxer. Please give me guideline to select.

Thanks.

h264 and mp3 sounds right. (although you'll need a pretty big cpu, if not several, to achieve live h264 encoding)

Trax (on #videolan, irc.freenode.net) has lots of experience with H264 streaming. You should ask him for help.
