Real audio and Video streaming support?

This may be a silly question. But are there any plans to implement these codecs within VLC? And also for .mov

I know mplayer supports both fiarly well with external codecs, but I would love to be able to do streaming with these formats.

Kind regards

I don't know anything about streaming with the Real formats (they must be encapsulated in RTP in order to be read by RealPlayer, VLC hardly supports this).

About playing, mplayer does this by linking to proprietary Windows DLL thanks to a modified dynamic loader.

The problem is that VLC is GPL software, which forbids us to do this sort of things. As long as there are no open source decoder, we can't decode it, unfortunately

I believe real player has a streamer up on their site, I'm pretty sure I used it a year or so ago. You can't stream real in VLC yet but you can use the original real player stuff. Look for stuff with the name Helix in it on real players site, they had changed the names of some stuff.

Yah I know...couldn't in theory you do this also? (GPL is not in violation, because it's just the dynamic link loader that's supportted by the VLC api's) I think there are are few other windoze clients that their real support this way. But of course they depend on realplayer to be installed.

If this was done could you stream it out to a file? (Not in rm format, but transcoded to say ogg?)

We follow the most strict interpretation of the GPL which does not allow this. Some people say this is allowed. Opinions differ. We consider it not to be allowed.

But...

Fair enough, I understand the need to keep the prog clean in case of problems. But... dosn't your quicktime implementation do this to support the proprietry sorenson codex? Or is there a fully GPL /BSD like implementation of these codec sets now...

And what about the wma support same deal?

In theory how hard would it be to port the mplayer aritechture for doing this? As a plugin for VLC

On OSX the QuickTime is a normal API anyone can use.
On Windows the same, but you need to install a SDK package from Quicktime (all perfectly legal).
On Linux (and Windows and Mac too) we have SVQ1,SVQ3, WMV and WMA support via an opensource decoder in ffmpeg. (WMV3 not available)

The implementation has already been done some time ago by someone in the team. He chose not to publicize the code because it wasn't going to be in VLC. So it can be done.

This is true, much as it would be nice to keep it all GNU or OPEN SOURCE, if you want to stream .rm or .ra filetypes use Real Helix, you can request a 12 month licence foc, after which......... you can ask 'em for another one (i did) however i would recomend trying to format new video in a less restricted way.

what about real alternative?

What about real alternative?

http://www.codecguide.com/about_real.htm

Would it be a problem to implement the functionality that this provides?

Hi !

Have quite same problem with rm files :

My provider alows us to see what we want from our computer in our tv, using magic vlc with it streaming habilities and their magic adsl box. And i can't convert any rm files. That's why it is not a problem of using an other codec for me : unfortunatelly they are rm and will stay so :-(

Would someone be allowed to buid a plugin for vlc that will allow to use real alternative ? Is it very hard to do or does the conversion into a streaming mode would use a lot of ressources ?

(hope my english is not so awful and my questions not too much off topic)

anyway, thanks for your work
