SOLVED stream to file from Quickcam 5000

I had an old Quickcam Exress that streamed to file no problems. I upgraded to a Quickcam 5000, but I can not get it to stream to a file. VLC either creates a blank file or crashes. What should I do?
By the way, this is on Windows XP, and it will play the local video fine, but will not save to a file.
