WME 9 to VLC Server

Postby clbgld » 18 Apr 2006 03:14

Managed to use VLC as a streaming server, connected to the output of Windows Media Encoder 9. Windows Media Player 9 or 10 (Windows, not Mac) opens the stream and plays quite well. However, VLC does not - it just hangs there showing "mms://ip:1234" at the bottom of the screen, and doesn't display anything.

WME is set to "pull from encoder" and is encoding an AVI file. VLC is set to open and pull from WME's local port, and stream it as mms/raw to the 1234 port on the computer's IP address. No compression or any other setting is being used, except for TTL=15. Windows Media Player can open this stream from any computer anywhere (so far), using "mms://ip:1234" URL mode.

Would anyone know if this is normal behavior, or is VLC supposed to be able to display the stream? (Windows Media Server is not being used). If I select "play locally" on the VLC that is streaming, it does show the stream - but any other instance of VLC trying to play the stream does not (it normally ends with "unable to open mms://ip:port" error) - unless I connect VLC to the port that is streaming out of WME, in which case it plays OK.

Many thanks,

CG

Got it - it is supposed to be "mmsh://", not "mms://". Whooops...

Hopes this helps someone...
