Streaming with client seek

Hello,
is there a streaming protocol, which allows seek on the client side? I know that's a tall order, but since I'm no professional in the field of streaming, I prefer to ask. I already tried searching for one (be it looking it up the web or, playing around with VLC parameters), for now- unsuccessfully. Any pointers will be gladly appreciated, be it with the help of VLC, ffmpeg or any other tool.
