I just downloaded VLC last week and now all my friends have downloaded it when I told them about it because I have some persoanl family vidoes and I want to share it with them all. Now I went thru all the online documentation but kind of stuck here:
I am behind a LAN, and my computer IP is 192.168.x.x1 (lets say) and when I stream out to 192.168.x.x2 (another computer in home behind same LAN), that computer receives and plays the stream on VLC. But I want to stream it outside of the router to the rest of the world, so that my friends who are across the globe could use internet connection to watch it. What would be the best streamout option for it: Multicast or Http? and what should I enter in the fields of streamout options of the server and what should be entered in the client VLC stream input fields in order to play the stream?
One more question: Some of my friends are unable to install VLC because they are not authorized to. So I want to sream out in MMS mode so that they could use already installed Media Player to open the stream. How would I do it? I mean I am behind a router (firewall disabled) and my IP is alond the lines of 192.168.x.x and my actual IP assigned to me by ISP is something else. What would have to be entered in the Streamoutput settings and in the Window Media Player's open box in order that they could play my stream.

I tried to go thru all the documentation that I could in order to find the answers, but I couldnt. Also I am not a very experienced programmer and dont understand the ins and outs very much. If you could answer, or guide me to some webpage that explains it, that would be a big help. Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!

Check your Firewall documentation. It will need to forward a port to your interal IP address ie port 8000 needs to go to 192.168.x.x. Then your family will need to connect to the extrenal IP address of your firewall. You can check that by going to http://whatismyip.com

Also if you are streaming over the internet you will probably want to use http and transcode to a smaller bitray (512kb or maybe less) so that it doesn't freeze up on the remote end.
