Transcoding a RealMedia stream

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but, here goes:

I've tried a number of different ways to do this but I just can't make it happen.

So, back in 2009, Battlestar Galactica did a forum with the UN about a number of things relating to how the series addressed contemporary issues.
This is available via the UN in a RealMedia format.
http://webcast.un.org/ramgen/ondemand/s ... 90317pm.rm

Inside this .rm file is this:
rtsp://webcast.un.org:554/ondemand/specialevents/2009/se090317pm.rm?cloakport=80,554,7070
--stop--
pnm://webcast.un.org:7070/ondemand/specialevents/2009/se090317pm.rm?cloakport=80,554,7070

Which on a Mac, in VLC, looks like this:
Image
after a moment the video beings to play.

I've tried using 'Convert Stream' from the menu using the file se090317pm.rm (which contains only the links to the stream) and saving to a file where I get a 199 byte file that contains (in hex):
Image
and never gets any bigger. I've tried a couple of variations but the results are the same: a small file that doesn't contain any real data.

So,
q1: what's the proper method to capture a stream like this to a file?
q2: If the RM stream is played by VLC, shouldn't it also be able to be saved to a local file and/or transcoded to h.324/mp4?

Overall, the video is small and low quality. It's available on youtube albeit chopped up. I'd like to get the original in its entirety with as minimal loss in quality as possible.

q1: this is the correct.
q2: it should

The issue here is that VLC --please stay polite-- up when recording: it is a bug.
