Can someone please help me find a good container to use so avidemux can read my files?

I need to know the encapsulation, video codec and bitrate, and audio codec and bitrate. Since I am not an expert, I've spent hours (really, hours) trying different combinations and haven't hit on one that works.

following up on my own post

here is what I have so far

if I transcode from within vlc to with

encapsualtion- mpeg-1
video codec mp2v, bitrate 1024
audio codec- mp3, bitrate 192

I can read it with avidemnux, but it's givin me a huge sync problem. There is huge shift that occurs right away, and keeps getting worse!
