I have found several threads and videos demonstrating what seems to be really easy. However, I have tried this on 4 different computers to no avail. Basically, I would like to stream my desktop, Windows 7, in 2 different formats. But I will stick with MJPEG over HTTP until I figure it out.

After a fresh install of VLC, I run through these steps.

1. Open Media, Capture Device >Desktop > Select Stream > set fps to 15
2. Next
3. Add HTTP, port 8080
4. Select Profile, I made a custom one for MJPEG
5. Next
6. Stream

What happens after I click stream is VLC closes. The icon disappears from my taskbar. When I reopen, I get a dialog that states.

"Ooops: VLC media player just crashed. Would you like to send a bug report to the developers team?"

I click No, and it VLC opens. I can repeat this to no avail.

VideoLAN clearly doesn't do what they claim. Streaming your desktop, based on the UI and other threads, seems to be a simple task. Yet, so many others are having problems and cannot get it to work. Thanks for the support!

Ah ha! Version 2.0.3 seems to work with streaming desktop.

Folks, this is crazy, if VideoLan says it can stream the desktop, and it doesn't, then it should be made clear to users. I can't find a guide that makes it work with the latest VideoLan version, so what is going on here? Can you stream a Win10 desktop over the local lan and internet, and if so, how in as few words as possible please!
This is not going to help VLC update!

The most straight forward guide to desktop streaming I could find is from 2010, and I can't get it to work.

I used port 8080, but its not connecting local net or on the internet, and I'm not seeing any blocking messages from Windows firewall.

Sad, we're in 2020 and its more like 1980!

Okay, so digging in a bit more, waste of my time and many peoples too, VLC Feb 2020 version is streaming go.mpg presumably from the desktop, Firefox and Edge load it though no user prompts.. :O, but neither will display it, it just gets saved to a file, endlessly, and if you cancel it, no way to end it, pff, the file is empty! :/

Trying to receive it on VLC itself on an android device, but "cannot be opened" even if I disable the Windows firewall!

What a mess this is! Come on VideoLan team, sort this one out, or tell people it doesn't work so we can ALL STOP wasting out TIME!

I'm having similar problems. I tried both: Casting my screen and casting a file. Open with: another device (my phone, same wifi), another vlc instance on same computer. I tried using :8080 at the end ot Ip. Nothing worked. Instructions I got were as follows:

Now I'll look for an youtube tutorial where someone manage to do it, and inquire for the vlc version. Maybe an older version will do it.

Made an account just to post that it doesn't work for me either. Can we expect any fixes in the future?

VLC 3.0.8 work:
Settings for server:
<Capture Device>
Capture mode: Desktop
Frame rate: 25 f/s (crucial)
<Destination Setup>
Add HTTP (defaults Port=8080 & Path=/)
<Stream Output>
Activate Transcoding on (first profile works for me)

Settings for client:
Media->Open Network Stream->Network tab
http://server_ip:8080/

Connection take about 15 sec, if error occurs click play button again.

There is 3 sec delay between both but I don't know why.
