Help with Streaming

Postby Coldfire202 » 22 Dec 2012 06:47

Hello, first off. I am brand new here and I have no idea where this would go; so, if some one can, please move it to the correct section.

Secondly, I used to use VLC for just playing videos, movies, and so on; but, recently I've been interested in the streaming via LAN connection.
But, the problem is. I have no idea how to do it, honestly. I am new to this function on VLC.
I want to be able to stream video from my computer that I am on, to any device in the house. I want to try to do this without the need for downloading software for the devices that will be viewing. So, like going into the Internet browser, like Safari or Firefox, and typing in some sort of address and then being able to receive/view the video being streaming.
No, I don't mean on a public site. I mean LAN, so only people connected to the Wi-Fi, or the Internet directly, can see it.

To display the video, you will need some software on the receiving devices. For example, you could run VLC on the receiver devices and press CTRL+V to type the network address.

I'm a newbie too. So I apologize in advance. I did, however make any effort to find the answer in the faq, manuals, forum…

My question is about streaming. I think I found out how to stream Unicast RTP, but for the heck of it, I can't find out how to receive the broadcast. There are many notes about what to enter in a console, but I can't find a console anywhere in VLC 2.0.5.

Ideally I want to stream live video from a digicam to my WLAN locally and receive the stream (video+audio) on a second computer connected to the same WLAN. The transmission is supposed to be unidirectional (no feedback required), and I want tot stream to a certain computer using as much of the WLAN bandwidth as possible.
I'm not familiar with terminal.app.

It would be wonderful if anybody could give me a just slight hint at how to set this up in VLC, particulrly how to maximize throughput and receive the stream on a single computer.

Thanks!

When you're streaming video from the computer with the digicam via RTP on port 5004 (for example), you can easily receive it on the target computer by pressing CTRL+V and typing "rtp://@:5004". To be more specific, you could also type something like "rtp://@192.168.0.4:5004", if 192.168.0.4 is the wlan ip adress of the target computer.

Afaik there is no console in VLC. When people talk about a console, they probably talk about the terminal of the operating system (like cmd.exe on windows).
