How to stream VLC with IIS if possible?

Postby Vash The Stampede » 02 Mar 2004 08:51

I'm new to VLC but so far it's worked great. I'm just trying to stream video over the internet for some friends of mine. If it's possilbe to stream video directly from VLC to VLC without a web server that would be great.

I've been trying to setup IIS to stream video with VLC. Documentation is hard to find for VLC.

I just wanna know what do I do. Do I enter 127.0.0.1 in HTTP? Do I point IIS to the "C:\program files\videolan\http" folder?

What does the client need to do to recieve the stream? I'm running a Windows XP machine and any help would be great.

Well, installing a whole web server might be overkill if you're just serving video to some friends. VLC comes with one. It's been mentioned elsewhere on the forum where to look for the documentation, but I'll post it here since I'm such a nice guy :-).

http://www.videolan.org/doc/vlc-user-guide/en/http.html

The trick of course is that for serving video, you don't care about the actual user interface. You just need an http server to share the goods. In that case, make sure you understand the --http-src command, 'cuz that's what you're gonna need to use, to actually serve the content rather than have your friends control your own instance of VLC.

Ideally what you're going to try and do is create a simple list of links to video files. Then your friends type the http link into their VLCs to play the streams.

If all of that documentation seems to hurt your head, the place to dump your video files with IIS should be 'C:\inetpub\www' if I recall, but it's been a loooong time since I've futs'd with IIS, so that could be wrong.[/i]
