Trouble saving stream to file

Sure hope this doesn't duplicate another topic...if it does, please send me in the right direction!

I am currently using VLC as my default player for my movies and TV shows in KODI. That all seems to work just fine. However, I would like it to save files as well...not just record them. I am currently using the following code:

--sout=file/ts:"E:/File Conversion/VLC/Recording/video-$(date +"%H-%M-%m-%d-%y").mkv"

and for the most part it seems to work OK. My problem is the file name. I would like it to be "video-2-23-07-22-2016.mkv", but what I get is "video-(date +"%H-%M-%m-%d-%y").mkv"

Anyone have any idea where I've gone wrong? And how do I get VLC to follow the command and then close?

I mistyped earlier....the file is saved as video-$(date +%H-%M-%m-%d-%y).mkv. I forgot the "$" when what I want is the file with the date & time.
