Videolan + Playlist = no go

I've been having a few issues with streaming a playlist

I have a playlist of MP3 songs. I can play them fine on Windows Media Player, WinAmp and VLC locally. However, if I try to stream it, neither a second instance of VLC nor VLC on another computer can pick it up.

Windows 98 as server, Windows XP as client, streaming playlist over multicast

any suggestions welcomed
