Streaming with a bt878 and embed it in a web page

Postby elesouef » 25 Oct 2010 16:24

Hi,

My goal is to stream a video while acquiring it from a bt878 card on an Ubuntu PC and, on another webserver, to display it to other people using almost only free software.

I read some of the posts of this forum and here is what I want to test :

Video taken from cameras in a theater -> bt878 card -> vlc acquisition -> http stream with ogg container (theora+vorbis) -> webpage with freesoftware player

Here are some of the question I'm left with :

* My bt878 card has s-video input (mandatory in order to get input from theater console), is it possible to have the sound with such connection ?
* I can get the sound from another PCI soundcard. What do you suggest me to use : line-in or microphone ?
* As Ubuntu uses PulseAudio, what should be used as input device ? (Or, Is Ubuntu a safe choice for this "transcoding" machine ? :) )
* And, last but not least : Is it possible to use a strictly free-software player embedded in a webpage to display the stream produced ?

Thanks very much for all your advices.

S Video does not support sound

Suggest line-in from your console would be a good choice

Ubuntu 10.04 should work "out of the box" sound wise providing you have selected the sources correctly

Hmmm depends on what you mean by "Free" or "Almost free"? Open source or Free to use pending specified restrictions on use? Either way it's still a grey area, depends on local law, what you actually doing and are using it for, eg commercial?, or what?
Embedding "ogg" would be a probable way to go, I could not comment on how well it may work.

Ok, I take good note of this.

Ok, are there any good source of info to build the sound input part of the command-line ?

The goal is to stream a public event of a public institution. If possible, we are trying to use as much as possible free software and standards. VLC is a good choice for us as for the transcoding and streaming part. We are thinking about Flowplayer and JWplayer in order to play the stream from a web page but, they are all flash components. But maybe a flash player is mandatory.

Thanks for your advices.

Try to get your video and sound capture device working just using "Open capture device" in the GUI with the "show more options box ticked. You may have to play with sound settings.

If you want to use a Command line approach, then take a look at the following "Appendix" section here. It is equally applicable to the Ubuntu 10.04 version in principle .

http://wiki.videolan.org/Stream_VLC_to_ ... h#Appendix

Flash is not mandatory, .asf remains an option if it suits your circumstances and requirements (its also very easy)

Ok, I think I've got it working. Need to tweak the audio encoding but nevermind.

Thanks very much for your help, Greg.
