Best linux distro to compile vlc with x264

Hi there,

I would like to get some suggestions on which linux distro to use to compile vlc with x264 and acc to produce iphone compatible videos.
I tried to do this on Fedora 10, but no luck, I have all kinds of libraries missing and it seems to be extremely hard to find ( like libavcodec ).

What would be the best and most stable system, also has ayone done it on Fedora 10, any howtos?
