Can I encode desktop capture w/video capture card?

Postby Aquakitty » 15 Mar 2009 05:07

Hi there, just wondering if it's possible to stream my desktop through my video capture card... for instance, by hooking up the svideo out on my video card, then into the svideo in on my TV tuner, and encode it that way..I know I can capture desktop with VLC but Im trying to use the hardware encoding if possible so it will be less strain on my cpmp when gaming.. feel free to let me know if Im off in lala land!

Thanks.

If the capture equipment has adequate drivers (DirectShow or V4L), yes.

Hmm, err, you do realize that S-Video is analog, don't you?

lol, yes, what I mean is, there's no options for s-video in on the TV Tuner, the analog that is in the screen just causes static, so I assumed that was looking at the coaxial TV in. I managed to get this working with windows media encoder by setting the device signal to s-video.

Doesn't work with VLC , tried many, many options so far all I get is static or a blank screen.

I am already doing HD streaming on the internet. I can show you some demos if you are interested.
Also for Alex: the latest news comes from the graphic cards sector. Soon it will be possible to use a PC graphic processor to perform other tasks. The graphics-processing unit (GPU) that normally handles only visual effects is taking over duties from the CPU. Usually CPU’s have a single processing core. But graphics chips have dozens of cores that are ideal for parallel processing – breaking complex tasks into smaller chunks which are processed simultaneously.
Let me know what you think about this ? I can give you some more info if you want.
Thank you

AquaKitty:

When you select your capture device, press the "Advance options" button and check off "Device Options" and "Tuner Options". Then when you start your capture, you will be presented with the configuraton dialogs for your capture card. Select "s-video" or "Cable" + "Input 1", where "Input 1" represents the input port number of your capture card's video inputs.
You may have to experiment until you discover which port number corresponds to the S-Video port on your particular card.
Also, you may find that you do not need to select "Device Options".

VLC version 0.9.9 has a capture device called "Desktop" that will capture desktop activity with a video capture card, but it won't record audio.

See my article How to record ANY streaming video using VLC:

There are special tools for this purpose, e.g. Screen VidShot, that allow you to capture video and sound from the whole desktop or a particular window... I hope, this may be helpful to you :)
