Wishing to setup a streaming server

Postby rca420 » 12 Dec 2008 21:14

Hello all!

I'm a newbie here and I came up with an idea to stream live tv as well as some of my movies to my some elderly neighbors over the valley (about 4 miles away) and came to found that VLC is the closest to what I want to accomplish upon hours of googling. There aren't many useful articles pertaining to IPTV except for an article that was published back in 2006 so I don't know revelant it is when compared to technology today.

I have purchased Windows 2008 Enterprise Server as well as a 2 quad core xeon cpu server with 4gb of RAM and 1TB hdd.

What software do I really need aside from VLC? Thank you!

Same here. Since upgrading to 0.9.8a, all of the Tutorials are out of date since the new version's GUI and internal menus have changed. Would really appreciate an up to date streaming doc.

Does anyone actually read these damn messages? From what I've seen, 0.9.8a has turned to pure krap. Nothing works the way it used to. Revert to version 0.8.6 and you should be fine.

The documentation is exported through Subversion where every one can update it. Nobody does. But why would people be nice to whineys like you?

Are there alternatives for starting a IPTV server? I'd like to have a few people utilize my service where they can each change to different channels without interrupting one another. I'm a complete beginner to iptv, but I have an extensive knowledge in windows servers (if that helps).

Anyhow, all I understand is that I need a set-top box and a streaming server like VLC, Darwin Streaming Server, Helix or Windows Media Services 2008. Am I missing anything else? Thank you! :)
