VLC desktop streaming

Postby ipnotech » 23 Nov 2008 22:36

Hi

I am new to the forums and have searched already on how to do this but I am not able to get this to work.

I have downloaded and installed VLC 0.96 (windows) on two pcs.

On the server pc I selected streaming, then desktop, then stream, selected mp4 encapsulation, then udp and the destination ip address of the other machine.

I go to the other machine , then open network , then udp, port 1234 and nothing. I get an error and vlc says to check log. I go into the vlc program directory an cannot find a log file.

I made sure there were no firewalls, turned off windows firewall.

Can I stream my desktop using http? And when I open network from the other pc , why is http set to port 123 when the server port defaults to 8080? I cannot change the port on the client pc.

How do I stream to multiple machines, ie I want multiple remote pc on the internet access my server desktop for viewing.

I have been trying for the last 3 days without success.

If anyone has done this successfully, I would very much appreciate their help.

Thanks with all my heart.

Regards

Hi!

I have a pending post with the same problem.
I just can assure you that in my experience:
-It works perfectly in Linux;
-It works in windows if you reduce the information; for instance, if you resize the encoded video. Otherwise, frames will be apparently dropped.

However, I could not find any solution or workaround...

Thanks for your reply, at least there is some life in the forum.

Is there any vlc developer reading this forums, that might have an idea?

Tonight I am downgrading back to vlc 0.86i to see if that works.

Hi Everyone

I solved my desktop streaming problem by downgrading to VLC 0.86i (windows platform).

It works perfect and it is rather quick.

There must be a lot of issues with vlc 0.96 still.

It is quite disappointing that a newer version is worse that the old one. Not surprised just look at MS.

But cannot expect the world, it is free.

I followed the steps you laid out for streaming, i'm able to stream avi to another computer on my lan, the streams are perfect however on the server side i do experience random crashes with vlc while streaming, then everything stops working and its difficult near impossible to shutdown the vlc process on my computer, very frustrating

Hi

I am not sure what to suggest here apart from making sure that your antivirus is not interfering, close all apps except for vlc, upgrade your video driver, update your windows and make sure there is no spyware.

Hi,
I'm new to the whole "My desktop streaming" thing ;-)
I'm on windows.
I'm able to stream webcam or other video/audio via http but I can't find the settings to "grab" my screen and to stream it...

Would you mind to tell me where can I find some hints or doc? Or would you tell me your config settings?

Many Thanks in advance!!

Stefano
