vlc can not play wmv3 files on Linux

VLC can not play wmv3 files on Linux
It report no suitable decoder module for fourcc 'wmv3'
but it can play on Windows

why?How?

On the windows OS, vlc uses a microsoft API to decode Windows Media 3 files.
This isn't available on linux/macOS so VLC can't decode wm3 files under these OSs.
(no open source decoder exists for wm3)
