Transcoded file does not show time or duration

We are streaming via an Ubuntu 8.0.4 box, and have found for some unknown reason we cannot transcode directly to .wmv, but we can transcode to mpeg, and later use ffmpeg on the command line to convert the mpeg file to wmv. The problem I am having is when I play the archived file in VLC it does not show any info about time, or duration. We need to change the start time and duration for the wmv output file. At this point I am having to guess when to start and end the ffmpeg conversion. The resulting wmv file does have all the time info and duration info though, so we are good there.

Any help would be appreciated.
