Streaming from Hauppage HD-PVR

Has anyone tried this device yet?

It is a hardware MPEG4 HD encoder, which outputs MPEG2 TS with MPEG4 AVC content, from Component inputs.

I'm interesting in reading live from the input and multicasting the result on my LAN. Is this possible?

I will go ahead and answer my own post since I haven't heard from anyone else yet.

I have one the of HD-PVR units in front of me, after a number of delays before Hauppage shipped it to me.

I have it running under Vista and just did some successful SD captures off the RCA inputs from a DVD player as a source. I've read a number of posts of people capturing HD content easily with it in the same fashion, using the component inputs. I will try that at work tomorrow. Quality looks great.

I am UNABLE to play back the TS files produced by the current windows capture device in VLC. Or rather I can play them with .8.6h however the video is not present, just some garbage and a few blacks on the uppper 1/8th of the screen that look like they might be right. The audio is fine. The bundled ArcSoft Theatre App can play back the TS without any issues.

My principle target is an IPTV set top box so I am less concerned about playback within VLC but somewhat surprised it doesn't play properly. However, as long as that doesn't impact that ability to multicast it to the box it shouldn't be an issue.

I'll post more details as they emerge.

Great news. The driver for linux (hdpvr) compiles easily on debian based systems, per the instructions on the MythTV Wiki.

I even got it to work on my ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop system which is running as a guest inside virtualbox on a Vista host, although I saw some flakey USB issues (which I think might be virtualbox).

I also have it working on a 7.04 Laptop (natively). No changes required to compile on the older kernel.

So far I have only sampled DVD output at 720x480, but it works very well. Picture and sound quality are excellent. I'm very impressed. I left it running a loop over night to see if any problems emerge.

Tomorrow I will purchase an HD DVD player and some HD discs to test against at higher res. I was able to literally do vlc pvr:// and have it play back even on my single core Sempron notebook. VLC handles the TS stream (in both Linux and Windows) without any problem (as opposed to the files the windows driver generates that VLC stable can not currently read).

I did also stream to my IP set top box and had smooth video but no audio. I suspect that is an AAC audio issue in the STB itself and will resolve separately.

Another question: I wanna hook up 2 HD-PVRs to the same computer, so I can stop fighting with my wife. Or maybe even 3 -- so kids can watch their stuff too. I am assuming these will just come up as different /dev/video{0,1,2} devices. Will they? Or how does it work in Windows? (Haven't used Windows in years, sorry if this is stupid question)

Multicast streaming does work using vlc. However, the stream dies whenever there is a resolution change in the source video. I believe this is a driver problem, and it should be fixed in the next driver release.

In linux, the devices will get assigned sequentially as you said (/dev/video{0,1,2})

I think I used something like

vlc pvr:// :pvr-device=/dev/video0 --sout #standard{access=udp,mux=ts,url=239.16.0.32:4788},

or you can just multicast it directly from the device using emcast.

I tried without specifying pvr, so simply using the device node:

I have some simple remuxing software which manages to do the job, but for various reasons I'd prefer to use VLC. Any ideas on how to achieve it?

So you can play the hdpvr with a different program?

I don't think that warning is a problem, but the error might be problematic.

Try restarting the hdpvr, sometimes they need that.

Make sure you've got all the requisite modules installed.

I've got it running on .8.6h...i've never tried .9 or 1.0

The unit is working fine as I can grab video by simply cat'ing the stream to a file.
Going back to an earlier VLC isn't an option for me as I have other software that depend on the more recent version.

My options at the moment seem to be:

Hope it's my error and that I'll work out how to fix it
Hope it's a VLC bug that gets fixed
Use my alternative re-multiplexing tool

My command line is:

Note the change from url to dst in the sout section, I believe this is a change in the syntax between versions of VLC.

I probably need to do some tweaking to get the best results but at least I have a staring point.

I'm trying to stream my HD PVR also, and I'm using the string you have above, except I'm changing the IP to the machine I plan on streaming to. However, I wanted to know your connection string. In otherwords, what are you using in the player to actually watch this stream on the dst machine?

I can't seem to connect using anything. Any help is appreciated!

This command is working for me as well, but on the client I'm getting a lot of frame drops, resulting in a noticeable 'jerkiness' to the video. Anyone know why this might happen/how to debug it? I have a hard wired gigabit network so I doubt that's the issue.
