Update to VLC on windows store? - NOT the UWP one!

Postby solway » 13 Dec 2023 11:35

Hi all
We currently deploy VLC using intune to 100's of PCs.
Intune uses the windows store (or can use winget) to push the software to the clients. MS store is useful to allow automatic updates. Instead of endlessly deploying the msi/exe files when there's a update.

Intune's Microsoft security Centre is issuing a warning due to the store version being out of date. 3.0.16. instead of 3.0.20 (current version)

I am talking about the VLC app here
https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/XPDM1ZW6815MQM

NOT the... VLC UWP
https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NBLGGH4VVNH

It says the VLC app (non UWP) is by videolan, but there is no mention of this app on the website for one... is this official? (only website link is to the VLC UWP app)

Is the VLC app being maintained? can the version be updated to current release??????

Looking at the winget versions on powershell, i get the following.

Code: Select all

Name Id Version Match Source -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VLC XPDM1ZW6815MQM Unknown msstore <-- currently 3.0.16 VLC UWP 9NBLGGH4VVNH Unknown msstore VLC media player VideoLAN.VLC 3.0.20 Moniker: vlc winget

I see here the winRT is deprecated, i assume this is talking about the UWP one??

Hi solway

Intune-Admin here. Can't tell you if it is maintained but i advise to keep your hands off the (non-UWP) app from "Microsoft Store (new)" in Intune.
It was implemented quite poorly in Microsoft Store by whoever done it. Once installed via Intune, you can't uninstall it - except manually on every single damn client - since the uninstall over intune will just (hard-) fail and there's nothing you could do against. I have already reported this but nothing has happened so far. Thus i'm currenlty also thinking about reporting it to Microsoft recommending them to kick this app out of the store until dev's done their "homework".

By the way, regular updates from the developer are basically a requirement for an app to even qualify for the Microsoft Store.

I would therefore recommend using alternatives other than VLC if it is to be installed via Intune at least until the developers manage to make uninstalling via Intune work at some point as well.
I consider the current VLC Microsoft Store package (non-UWP) to be unusable for the above-mentioned reason.

If you absolutely need it, download the corresponding .exe from the official website and package it as a Win32 app in Intune. PSADT can also be helpful in this regard.
However, you will then have to update the package from time to time.
