Windows 10 - VLC from Windows Store

Hi guys

Bit of an odd one. When I play a song in the Windows Store version of VLC, it will play the full song, and then when it goes to play the next song, it crashes.

From the Event Viewer I see:

Faulting application name: VLC.Universal.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5afabdba

Beside the issue, what do you love in this GUI?

I just like the colours of it, I currently have mine set to the dark theme, and the layout when playing a song just looks sleek!
Currently looking like this

Ok, so mostly for audio.

Mostly yeah, I do watch the occasional film through it, but mainly for audio. The problem is specifically with audio though it would seem.

That's weird... no one else seems to have this issue.

Does that happen with all your files?

Could you share a few with which I could try and reproduce your issue? You could upload them on some cloud hosting service.

Thanks.

What model of computer do you have?
Which version of Win10 are you running?

I cannot reproduce with those 2 files.

Just played those on repeat on the music player view and let the playback run for a while... do you do anything else to encounter the issue?

Nope nothing special!

Turn PC on, open VLC, press play on a song.

I use a Steelseries Arctis 5 headset, running the latest Steelseries suite with onboard 7.1 soundlbaster

:(

I really cannot reproduce your issue, even with your files, though I understand the error message. It says the system tries to redraw the UI successively in a loop which does not end and ends up freezing the app.
Tried playing your files, on repeat, pressing back and forward (and not), for a while but I can't reproduce. Not sure how to help with this, you're the only one reporting this also :(

Have you tried having just a couple songs in your library, to see if that changes anything? I'm just making (barely educated) guesses at this point FYI.

I have the same problem with my local MP3 files, both when playing an album or single tracks. I'm on Windows 10 Home, version 1803, build 17134.191. I'm using the recommended screen resolution of 1680x1050 with 125% scaling. Maybe that is a hint, as the background image constantly fades in and out to make it more interesting to watch? OK, set the scaling back to 100% and could play several tracks of an album in a row now, so I guess this is the bug. By the way, having one or more artist images instead of the same album image as background would be even more interesting in my opinion.

Besides that, I also like the interface, e.g. that it can scrobble to Last.fm (starting at the beginning of a track though which is wrong) or the fast online update with correct album covers for my music library.

I don't have many local video files, but would like to play a DVD with it once in a while. As far as I know, this is not possible (yet), but maybe later? I know that the desktop version can do this, too.

Yep that seems to be it, thanks for the hint. I manage to reproduce the crash with Windows scaling > 100% when moving to the second song of the playlist. If I disable the album image (foreground, not the blurred background one) no more layout cycle issue. Haven't figured out how to fix this yet.

Hi, thank you for your reply. Right now I'm playing single tracks and full albums with the MS Store version at 125% scaling, but not in fullscreen mode, i.e. I'm using the default window size. This seems to work better than in a maximised window, but as I am writing this, VLC crashed again after four album tracks. ;-)

In the meantime I also checked the Last.fm scrobbling again, and it seems VLC always scrobbles at the beginning of a track which is not a good idea, e.g. if you skip through an album or playlist, you would have to delete these unwanted scrobbles from your Last.fm profile.

And when I am only playing one track of an album, it even scrobbles at the end again, so I get duplicate scrobbles for this track. The usual scrobbling implementation would only scrobble a track after 50% of the track length and/or after 4 minutes for a track longer than 8 minutes.

Finally both Windows versions seem to use the old 1.0 scrobble protocol which affords to fill in your Last.fm credentials in the settings. Last.fm recommends to use the newer 2.0 protocol which uses online authentication with your Last.fm account.

Last but not least it would be nice if the MS Store version also sends the "Scrobbling now" info to the Recent Tracks list on my Last.fm profile while playing a track like the new 3.0.3 desktop version does.
