VLC opens in Playlist screen for video instead of playing video.

When I double click a video the Playlist screen opens.
Then the video plays.
When video is closed Playlist displays.

I would rather that vlc closes with no playlist (the way it has for the prior 15 years of usage).
How do I turn this off?

Edit: vlc version current to this date. Win 7 64 bit OS
