VLC 3.0 for Windows Phone and Windows RT

Postby FrankL » 20 Feb 2018 20:37

Hi there

I've got one Windows Phone (Lumia 950) and a Surface 2 (Windows RT).

How can I get the latest VLC Player 3.0 onto my devices?
VLC is not available in the related Windows stores.

Thanks for your help!

Have a great day.

Hi FrankL,

Which OS versions are both your devices running?

Which country are you in? Maybe the Store does not display some apps depending on location (but should be fine).

If you're on Windows 10, install https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p ... blggh4vvnh
If you're running Windows 8.1, this is the one https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p ... zdncrcv5tl (not been updated in a while)

Hi mfkl

thanks for your reply.

I am living in Germany.

The phone has Windows 10 mobile, latest version.
The Surface 2 RT has the latest edition of OS Windows 8.1.

The Windows 8.1. shop link just leads to the old version of VLC.
The Windows 10 link installs a VLC version with release date 21.05.2016.

Currently that's all that's available on Windows 8.1. I'm working on an update, no ETA though.
The Windows 10 link installs a VLC version with release date 21.05.2016.

Where do you see that release date? I suspect it is the initial release date you're looking at.
To make sure, check the app version https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc- ... pp-version

Hi Motfis,

Not actively, it's currently blocked by 2 critical issues but we're not forgetting about it. Win10 maintenance and releases take precedence though.

hi, my VLC (in win8.1) just autoupdated to v3.1.0. Very surprising & exciting to get new update.
But..... after the latest update, many function is not working at all. music tab, video tab, settings, all I cannot access them. immediattely force close.
The only function I can access is browse & network. For browse, also I cannot add more music to the playlist, just playing one music/folder.
I hope all these problem will be fixed soon..

Also for interface-wise, I think this version is worse than previous version. This is the interface of my current versionhttps://imgur.com/a/h529Iqv. The buttons and seek button are very small and "old style", compared to previous version https://store-images.s-microsoft.com/im ... h=787&q=60;https://store-images.s-microsoft.com/im ... h=787&q=60 or uwp win10 version https://mspoweruser.com/wp-content/uplo ... 08/vlc.jpg.

Thanks for the logs. That seems to be another exception hiding your other problems.
many function is not working at all. music tab, video tab, settings, all I cannot access them. immediattely force close.
Are you saying you can't play a single video?
The only function I can access is browse & network. For browse, also I cannot add more music to the playlist, just playing one music/folder.
Yes that's normal.
Also for interface-wise, I think this version is worse than previous version.

Can you be more specific? What's worse?
Am not familiar with the previous UI, this one was sort of taken from the Win10 app.
I'll do what I can, but compared to the previous version, I'd say you should expect maybe less pretty pixels but also less crashes.
The buttons and seek button are very small and "old style"
About "old style": Which buttons do you mean? The back button is the same than the Windows Store and class Windows apps.
The pause/play/back/forward seem indeed a little bit different, but not that much. Is that really an annoyance?

About the size: Which device are you on? I'm on a Surface 2 (1920*1080) and it looks pretty fine here.
What specifically do you think should be made bigger for a more friendly touch experience? I can make some things bigger but I'll need you to be specific regarding which buttons/control.

Thanks for the feedback though. Much appreciated.

So, can it be fix soon? many parts is not usable at the moment. Settings (pic 2), and settings next to volume, and music tab make the app crashes.
Are you saying you can't play a single video?
Sorry, somehow the video folder was removed from library. I can play video, but not music from music tab. Video tab is OK, but if we press back after play video, try to play other video or music... then the app hangs. it does not play anymore. I need to force close it. back from music is OK.
I'll do what I can, but compared to the previous version, I'd say you should expect maybe less pretty pixels but also less crashes.
Actually at the moment, it crashes a lot, much more than previous version (1.7 if i remember correctly?).
1. playlist for music player, I like prev version more. I think it is better if we press show/hide playlist, the playlist appear below the player and stay there, not kind of pop up window that will disappear if we touch outside the pop up will disappear.
2. music player does not show any album art.
3. I like the blur album art as player background in the previous vlc (pic 1).
About "old style": Which buttons do you mean? The back button is the same than the Windows Store and class Windows apps.
The pause/play/back/forward is OK. ~10% bigger maybe will be better :).
The seek bar & volume are too small. ("old style" : like default windows; very small, square, pic 3. Prev VLC has bigger and more "modern" look : big & empty circle, pic 1)
About the size: Which device are you on? I'm on a Surface 2 (1920*1080) and it looks pretty fine here.
Surface pro 3 (2160x1440).

Thanks for the answer & your effort to update the app!!
