Windows phone; FLAC 'may not play'??

Can someone explain when using Windows Phone 8.1, .flac music as supposedly the best lossless format- message " may not play in background"

- stops playing on phone lock
- stops if screen times out to save battery
- stops if switching to another app
- doesn't even remember what album when you return, let alone track or position

My question therefore: What bloody use is that? I thought VLC was meant to be the dog's bollocks. Am I expecting too much?

The Windows Phone 8.1 is not currently actively being worked on. Background audio issues are known.
I'm currently in the process of updating the code to ship a new version of vlc with the app, but this proves difficult as Microsoft is sort of abandoning the platform (e.g. dev tooling wise).
