I used Windows Phone 8.1 and tried to use VLC Player and faced the same issue.
Sometimes VLC Player can play my videos stored on the SD card for a long time, but more often it crashes with the same video files. They are all of AVI file type and are perfectly played on PC using VLC Player.
Recent upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows Phone 10 did not make any change with crashes.
