The subtitle doesn't work

I use the VLC for Modern Windows which I downloaded through my windows app store on my tablet. I think this is the right OS.
When I'm trying to search for any subtitle, since it doesn't assume one automatically even though it's in the same folder, it doesn't work. I click on the subtitle symbol, that chatty symbol, click on 'select subtitle file', select the .srt file and when I'm done nothing happens. I don't think I'm doing something wrong since everything is so painfully simple but when I try to see my subtitle list after I select the file, there are no files selected. Welp.

I know for a fact this app for windows rt works in the way he says it doesn't, I just downloaded it yesterday for my surface and I've loaded sub files into a video since. The issue is likely either device related or version is out of date.
I know it's not sure to an issue with .srt files either, as I've used them in the current version.

Some versions not up to date, could have roken subtitles.
