Is it possible to nest media groups? I have a number of topics and would like to have a media group for each. Each topic has a few subjects that I would similarly like to keep separate - ideally with some groups within the top-line group.

Are there any strategies for segmenting materials in this way?

Sadly not, there is no way to nest groups so far. Of course, you can do multiple groups and also playlists (where one media could be part of multiple playlists), but nothing nested.

Grasping at straws here, is it possible to have more than one instance of VLC so that topics could be separated that way?

You could install VLC more than once (we do that a lot for development), but this would require different so-called Bundle IDs and compiling VLC yourself - so probably not a viable solution I'm afraid.
