HIgh battery usage when watching videos from a samba share on iPad

Hello,
I noticed that when I watch a video in VLC that is streamed from a samba share that I have at my home's local network, the iPad gets hot and the battery usage by VLC is enormous.
For example, I was watching The Office recently on my 9th gen iPad (classic 10.2'' model, 64GB, running iOS 15.7.2), and one episode of ~20-minute 1080p video would result in about 10-12% of battery usage with a 20-30% brightness.
Is this an expected behavior with network streamed videos or not?
