increase volume in tvOS?

I have an Apple TV HD connected to a TLC-Roku television. I can use the strange, very difficult "browser" in VLC to navigate to my file server and I can watch videos (without subtitles) from there.

But, the volume is greatly reduced. The sound of my treadmill drowns out the sound of the dialog. I have not been able to make the sound any louder using the TLC-Roku controls: they show volume of 100.

Other files not played on the TLC-Roku by VLC for tvOS are clearly audible over the background noise.

What is VLC doing to my files to attenuate the volume? The files can be played at loud volume using VLC for macOS, VLC for iPad, just not VLC for tvOS.

Am I missing something obvious, or something not at all obvious? Or is it a, er, "limitation?"

We are going to add a pre-amp to VLC for Apple TV within the next days, which will allow you to increase the volume.

The update with the new pre-amp option (3.3.10) is now available on tvOS and iOS!
