Can't get to shuffle on iPhone

Note: I'm using photos on postimg.cc - isn't there a way to upload a photo to this forum so it shows inline? There are img tags, but I don't see a way to upload attachments or images.

When using VLC on my iPhone, when a file starts playing, I get this on my screen:

On the control bar on the bottom I can see the repeat and shuffle controls. They disappear rather quickly - they don't seem to last even 5 seconds. If I need to change the repeat control and the shuffle play, I can't get to both. The controls don't even pause for time after I touch one. It's only something like 2 seconds when a file starts, then I get this:

The two controls I use most are replaced by others (that I rarely use - but I'm sure people do.) The ONLY way I've found to get back to the shuffle and repeat controls is to skip to the next file in the folder. This is sloppy and a pain. If I touch one of the two (like, say, repeat), the control bar still changes quickly, without even waiting for as much as 2 seconds after I've touched the control - so I can't get to shuffle and change that.

How can I get back to the first screen, showing shuffle and repeat controls without having to skip the current file and start the next one? I have had times I've had to skip through several files before I can set both shuffle and repeat to what I want.

The shuffle and repeat buttons are not displayed when playing video on iPhone, just for audio. In fact, you should not see the changing of the buttons - is this on an older phone? However, you can of course still control shuffle and repeat - just touch the "..." button to reveal the controls for video.

I had tried almost everything BUT that - the one logical thing to do.

Yes, it's an older iPhone, but I have it automatically update software. I keep it on my night stand and use it, with a sleep mask with bluetooth audio to help me fall asleep. (Old TV shows that I've seen a million times distract me enough it knocks whatever I've been thinking about out of my head but they're not so distracting I need to stay awake and hear what happens.) Being able to use this old iPhone, with VLC, this way is an important sleep aid for me.
