Video showing on iPad Files under VLC but doesn't show on VLC app

Postby urtica » 07 Jun 2022 01:09

Hello
I've downloaded VLC on an old iPad running iOS 9.3.5
The idea is to use a few of cheap old iPads to display videos on a loop for an art exhibition.

I connected the iPad to Macbook running Catalina 10.15.7
From Files, I dragged and dropped the video file (.mov) to the VLC folder. Initially, the file doesn't show, then I disconnect the iPad, connect it again and it shows under VLC.

The problem is that I can't see the file on the VLC app on the iPad. VLC still advices to sync through iTunes but there's no iTunes for some years now!
Google Drive app not compatible with old iPads. Tried Google Drive via web but this doesn't work either.

Any fixes?

I have a similar issue ……. After a certain update, was it a VLC update or an iPad iOS update? , can’t say as existing files were all showing up ok but recently, when adding any new movie files, some are ok but not all ……… and I think I’ve just realised a commonality, in that if the actual playback length of the video is longer than say an hour, then those videos don’t show up in the app after I’ve transferred them to the iPad files.
I’m using an iPad Pro 12.9 2018 with latest iOS and latest vlc as I’ve just deleted it and reinstalled from the App Store……
I use vlc to access a video file stored on my NAS, and playback streaming from the NAS over Wi-Fi is perfect
I then use the vlc download option to transfer the file to the vlc folder which I can access ok from the iOS files app, and tapping the video file from there plays just fine in vlc ……. But the same file doesn’t show in the vlc video library pane
But what I’ve just realised is, as long as the video file is of a shorter playback time (appears that any less than an hour ok) then it appears in the video library pane ok
I’ve deleted all files and tried transferred several different video files over the same method, and again only the ones with a playback time of less than an hour show up ok, doesn’t matter on file size, as a full HD 45min runtime file of 4GB shows up fine, but a lesser resolution movie of 1hr 45m but 2.5GB doesn’t show up in the app ……
all playable from the NAS over Wi-Fi , all transferred via vlc’s own download buttons, all available in the vlc folder via the iOS files app,
but after a certain recent update, only shorter runtime videos added are shown within the vlc video library pane, any movie clip running longer than hour can only be accessed by using files.app …… just a bit weird
