Streaming DVD to Apple TV

Hi there,

I'm trying to stream a DVD to my Apple TV using VLC. Should this be possible by opening the disc, select streaming output, and join it on the Apple TV?

I did not succeed after some hours of tying in both the GUI and command line interface. Hope somebody could help.

Thank you!

This is not something VLC currently supports. It works for Chromecast, but for Apple TV, VLC needs to gain native support for AirPlay, which is something that we want to do for version 4, but so far work is not advanced in a good way, so I'm not sure whether we'll actually succeed.

Probably, the best to stream a specific DVD to Apple TV is ripping it and using QuickTime to do the AirPlay streaming. Of course, this is cumbersome and long.

Could VLC on my Android TV help me?

VLC on Android TV could open .iso files stored somewhere, but it cannot open DVDs directly.

However, if you have an Android TV, you could chromecast to it from your computer, no? This works quite ok for DVDs.

OK, thank you. And is this the same method as you were pointing to when you mentioned that DVD streaming works for Chromecast, or do I have more options?

You don't have any further options. You need to start DVD playback on your computer including the menu navigation and once you started the correct part of the DVD, enable the rendering via Chromecast. From the Chromecast device, you don't have any way to manipulate the track, chapter or title selection. Note: we don't support the display of subtitles via Chromecast for any input.

Thank you very much for all the clear information. I still hope for a better solution.

In the most ideal situation, I would like to use my Apple TV for playback. That's because all our media runs through it, and the audio setup is AirPlay based.

When using the Android TV for playback, I have to use a HDMI connection to my Sonos soundbar and could use the Sonos app to transmit audio to other Sonos speakers, but not to other AirPlay speakers.

I don't mind which way the Apple TV might be used; using AirPlay or by mounting the disk in an app.

The absence of subtitles is also a problem for me.

There is a YT howto pc video "Stream From Windows 10 DVDs Remote Movies". You need to setup a vlc stream then use the vlc atv app.

Watched the video that DonBn08 referred to (https://youtu.be/kBqJ3wMA0nc?t=600), but still not succeeded on this.

Looks like there are two routes within the macOS VLC app;

1;
Go to File, select Transcode/Stream (translated from Dutch).
Select the VOB file you want to play from the DVD disc.
Select H.264 + MP3 (TS) as the profile (like in the video).
Select HTTP as the destination.
My DVD player starts making noise, looks like playing starts, but I can't open the stream from another VLC app.

2;
Go to File, select Open Disc (translated from Dutch).
Select the DVD disc you want to play.
Select the title and chapter you want to play from (like in the video).
Check stream-output, set is as HTTP, MPEG TS, H.264 and MP3 manually.
Nothing happens in my opinion.
