Video filename DOES NOT look right

Postby meet2002 » 15 Oct 2019 00:32

The video filename DOES NOT look right (including the display in Video Group), For example, there are 2 videos, Film.S01E35.mp4 and Film.S01E36.mp4, they are shown as same video filename "Film" in the VLC (the name for the related video group is "Film. S01E3"). Right now, I don't know which film should I watch first.

Please fix the bug. Thanks.

Thank you for the report.

I was able to reproduce this issue, and we will take a look.

I think the issue is due to a setting.

For now as a workaround, disabling `Optimise item names for display` in settings under `Media Library` should do the trick.

Did the file name convention change? Is Series_Name_S02E03_Episode_name.mp4 no longer valid? In version 3.2.2 my old files with an underscore instead of a period have the title show up as "Series Name S0"

Just to be sure, are you talking about video groups?

Right now the default detection is based on the first 6 characters commonly matches to sanitized media titles.

Yes, I am referring to the video groups. The previous version indicated series name and season. So, basically, this version is only paying attention to the first 6 characters?

When I saw the announcement that the app was being completely re-written I was expecting features like file organization to be ported rather than completely re-written. I think that's why people are frustrated.

Hi
When I saw the announcement that the app was being completely re-written I was expecting features like file organization to be ported rather than completely re-written. I think that's why people are frustrated.
Rewriting them was necessary to port them. Now it's integrated into a wider scheme of maintenance and the previous behaviour has to be stabilized.

Recognizing media groups is full of stupid heuristics to handle the more stupid file naming possible. Sometime it can completely fail but we're working on more sustainable solutions for the future.

Thanks. Understanding the reasons for the monumental task does make it easier to be patient. I appreciate the response....and that the developers are taking the time to respond to the forum in general.

My >700 video files with file names filled with hyphens were suddenly all changed to spaces in the latest VLC for iOS. Turning “Optimize File Names” OFF used to allow hyphens, suddenly it changed and all my hyphens disappeared. Changing that setting does nothing. What happened and where are my thousands of hyphens?

I may not have the complete full answer, but here's what I did that solved the problem.
Read through everything before attempting!

Remove the following:
SYMBOLS including but not limited to: [ , ] \ | . ! - _ @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) : ' "
The following letters: S E (even if they are in phrases like S02E12)

Basically, make all your file names as simple as possible just for your way of identification.

Afterwards, you will have to change the title of your file (WHICH IS NOT THE RENAMING/NAME)
You will either have to right click on the video file, go to properties, details, then change the title/name from there for each individual file;

Otherwise, what I do is to use Mp3tag which is my go-to while renaming and editing the properties of many files.

Once you have successfully installed Mp3tag, highlight all your files that you'd've planned on editing (or use Ctrl+A), Right Click and click on Mp3tag.
There, after doing all the renaming, you Ctrl+A and click on Convert, in which you click Convert Filename-Tag
Then, delete your preexisting files on VLC in your application and move the NEW edited files into your VLC application.

Regarding the renaming of the files, you can also use Mp3Tag to select all files, click on ACTIONS (QUICK), select REPLACE, select ALL for your Field.
Then put in the symbols/letters in the Replace section and the rest should be self-explanatory.
Remember to enable Case-Sensitive when replacing letters. (Also note that if your episode title has the letter S or E per se, you would have to add it in manually after replacing!)

Hope this works for you too!

I tried that but it didn't have any effect.
