V3.2.0 (334), samba connection problems.

At the network page, I tapped my Samba service, it apparently entered my sharing page but quickly it bounced right back to the network page. So, I tapped it again, it appears connected successfully at the second time and it didn’t bounces back. As I was expecting business as usual, I tapped one of sharing folders but not a file, it entered swiftly and quickly it bounced back. So, I applied a tap again on the folder, and it works for the second tap. This occurrence will also applies to any other folders that has not been tapped.
VLC for iOS version 3.2.0 (334) is installed on my iPad mini 4 (12.4.1). Samba service of Asus RT-N18U with the latest firmware.

Same problem here after the update, my iPhone and iPad cannot connect to File Servers (Time-Capsule).
Apple TV is fine, no issues so far.

Hello,
Thank you for the reports.
We identified an issue with SMB1/2 and this should be fixed with the next release.

It ain’t over till the fat lady sings. Thank you.

FYI - On my iPad, I am using an app called "Documents" that permits me to access the video files on my home LAN network (all PCs) and play them on a video player inside "Documents" on the iPad.
It is making an SMB connection the way VideoLan used to. And it will permit me to connect even though my home PCs do not require User Name or Password. (In Documents, I leave those fields blank and hit the next or connect button.)
It's not great but OK.

Hello,
For your information, Version: 3.2.1 (335) resolved the error of samba connection that I was having in the previous release version. However, once the smb server was connected, the connect to the server page did not close automatically; I had to tap cancel to close it.

Has it been reviewed by Apple, and is it ok?

Just updated to 3.2.1 AND tried.
Prompts me for User Name and Password (which I skipped before) and then connects only very slowly - needs minutes.
I don't have a password on either side of my dual-booting Win 7 + Win 10 machine. In VLC now, I type in the User Name, leave the Password blank, and it' gives me a spinning circle for a long time. Also, the prompt does not go away - I have to hit Cancel. After a few minutes, it shows the Shared folders on my PC.
Connecting finally, but this is much worse than before. There is no improvement in 3.2 over 3.1 - it's definitely worse, and I would gladly go back to 3.1.
Hey - VLC - you're not done here.

Indeed, thanks for the heads up!
The auto closing will be fixed with the next release.

Still does not work - the login to SMB server gets stuck and won't go away in 3.2.1. This whole 3.2 branch is a disaster. Do you actually test anything before uploading?

Yes, 3.1 was very stable. I want to destroy my iPad now; watching videos while sick in bed now really sucks thanks to the 3.2.x "update"

Apple's tyranny prevents it. If you want freedom best bet is never buy another iOS device as I will do. I'm sick and tired of crappy updates ruining my hardware that I own.
VLC could release 3.1.9 separately as a "new" app but they are too mean to do that.

It seems 3.2.1 (335) still have problems.

There is a short workaround to use VLC 3.2.x with videos or streams on network drives until VLC is able to fix SMB connection problems.
You need a file managing software which supports the share functions. I used FE FileExplorer for it (theres a free version), but I guess it will work with other apps as well. In FE you can create and establish a network connection to the NAS and navigate to the file intended to play on VLC 3.2.x. Do not open the file, stream it to VLC. In FE hit the three vertical dots behind the file and hit "Stream to...", then select VLC. VLC app will open. Hit "play" and video stream to the network source starts. While viewing, FE could be closed, because its not needed anymore.
This is just a short workaround, I discovered, but I would love to see SMB connections working again in VLC.

iChris - Thanks for tip. Works as you said.
Now I don't have to wait minutes while VideoLan spins the circle and after a long time (five minutes?) connects to my SMB shared folders. And that's after confusion in the prompts along the way.
It is very sad that VLC has ruined the good functionality of VideoLan. There are many other complaints on this forum. The changes seem brainless. MS did the same thing to Skype and lost half of its users. What happened at VLC? Did a dumb but ambitions too-young person push out a better, careful senior engineer?
I can't imagine what the VLC team is thinking.

SMB (version 1 I believe) connection to my media streamer device, a Verbatim Mediashare hasn’t worked on VLC since version 3.x
Works absolutely fine on other apps like nPlayer and Infuse. Would love to see this working again.

Keep in mind, Neon, that SMB vn.1 was deprecated for vital security reasons. I'd advise you to ensure that vn.1 is purged from your devices ..unless you want others to play around inside them remotely.

Did not know about that. So VLC officially no longer supports SMB v1?
Can't do anything about my device then. Doesn't seem to have any firmware updates to support later versions.
Thats a shame. Will have to stick with other apps then.
